Every bracket should be securely screwed into a stud on the wall to secure the bracket from falling down, and potentially hurting someone, or ruining their trophy.
Many people have done just fine by installing their brackets with nylon, or metal wall anchors when they couldn't find a stud, but it is not recommended. Especially on elk size brackets.
Euro-Systems
These may be some of the easiest mounting systems on the market. The Euro-Systems rely on the flange piece that is located on the mounting bar; this piece holds the skull in place. Sometimes a little bending up or down on the flange is required to fit the exact shape of the skull's knuckles.

Adjusta-Buck
This is a revolutionary way to display your racks that you have cut from the skull. The mounting procedure for the adjusta-buck is a little more difficult than other mounting systems, but the finished product is hands down worth it over and over again.
Step 1
Mount the bracket to a wall.
Step 2
Place your rack on the mounting plate of the Adjusta-Sytem, and figure out what angle you would like the antlers to sit. It is recommended to make the antlers sit in the natural position. That is where the antler beams run parallel to the ground, or slightly down.
Step 3
Trim the skull that is attached to the antlers to fit the angle that you wanted in step two.
If you mess up on your cut, it is not the end of the world. You can shim your rack up or down with some scrap wood, or etc.
Step 4
Now that the rack is cut to the right angle, detach the wood off the adjusta-system, and screw the rack to the wood.
Step 5
Fill in the voids with plaster, or spray foam.
Step 6
Once the plaster or foam has dried, shave excess off, and sand to smooth finish.
Step 7
Wrap the unit with the wrap given. Use a stapler to staple the edges to the bottom side of the wood, and then trim the excess away.
Step 8
Screw the metal mounting plate to the back of the wood attached to the rack.
Step 9
Place the metal mounting plate with the wrapped antlers on the Adjusta-Buck bracket.
Step 10
Adjust the Adjusta-Buck to desired position, and enjoy the appearance and adjustability.
Adjusta-Sheds
Finally, there's a way to show off those sheds you find, and it's easy. The Adjusta-Sheds bracket has all the hardware to make an easy, and perfect look for your sheds. The only things you need is a drill with a 1/4" bit, 1/2" wrench, and a 7/16" wrench.
Step 1
Drill your sheds directly down the center of the button on the bottom of the shed (run the bit in the direction of the beam).
Step 2
Thread two nuts on the back of one of the hanger bolts (tighten the two bolts to each other).
Step 3
Now thread the hanger bolt into a shed (make sure you thread the hanger bolt so that the whole length of the lag is inside the shed).
Step 4
Untighten the back nut off, and then use it on the other hanger bolt to repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other shed.
Step 5
Now you have to figure out what width you would like your shed buck to be (you can do this by utilizing the holes on the shed adapters to the shed adapter plate, or just by twisting the shed adapters back).
Step 6
Bolt on the sheds with the hanger bolts attached.
Step 7
Adjust away to desired look.
